The Neumann M 147 large diaphragm tube condenser microphone brings back the sound of classic Neumann mics from the 1950s. Equipped with the legendary K 47 capsule, the M 147 combines the vintage sound of tube microphones with the flexibility of modern design. Featuring a fixed cardioid polar pattern and minimal self-noise, the M 147 makes it easier than ever to capture authentic tube tone with today´s ultra-quiet digital systems.
RECREATING A CLASSIC
Recording engineers tend to look back at vintage microphones as the pinnacle of recording technology. But the truth is, while classic tube and ribbon mics may sound great, they weren’t without their drawbacks. Vintage microphones tend to be very noisy, making it difficult to capture intimate performances.
The M 147 is specially designed for modern recording studios. Inspired by the legendary U 47, which revolutionized studio recording in the 1950s with its warm, rich tone. The head amplifier of the M 147 combines classic tube circuitry with an advanced solid state output stage for vintage sound with a modern punch.
In order to accurately recreate the unmistakable sound of the iconic U 47, the M 147 is equipped with slightly more compact version of the iconic U 47 capsule head. It also shares the same K 47 large diaphragm condenser capsule, known for its exceptional combination of warmth and presence.
FROM QUIET TO LOUD AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN
While vintage microphones relied on large and expensive audio transformers, the M 147 utilizes Neumann’s new state-of-the-art transformerless solid state output stage. This innovative design ensures minimal self-noise for pristine recordings full of analog flavor.
The M 147 perfectly recreates the U 47’s distinctive midrange, making it an excellent choice for male or female vocals. While the M 147 is ideal for recording quieter sources, it can also be used to add energy and excitement to loud sources like guitar amps. As the input signal is increased, the M 147 increased distortion levels up to 5% THD, creating a sense of elevated loudness by means soft saturation, just like with traditional tube microphones.
